Palworld Breeding Farm Guide (1.0): Unlock, Setup, Cakes

Quick answer

The Breeding Farm unlocks at Technology Level 19 for 2 Ancient Technology Points (after you beat Lily and Lyleen) and costs 50 Fiber, 20 Stone and 10 Wooden Boards. Put one male and one female Pal from your base on it and a Cake in the box at the front; eggs appear in that box.

Breeding is how you get the Pals you can't catch, and how you build a Pal with exactly the passive skills you want. It all runs through one structure: the Breeding Farm. Here is how to unlock it, set it up so it never stalls, and pick the right Cake in Palworld 1.0.

Unlocking and building the farm

Technology Level19
Ancient Technology Points2 (after beating Lily and Lyleen)
Materials50 Fiber, 20 Stone, 10 Wooden Boards

The farm is a fenced pen with a wooden box at the front. Place it somewhere inside your base range; it takes up a fair amount of ground, so leave space for a second one later.

You also need an Egg Incubator (a separate, much earlier unlock) to hatch what the farm produces.

Setting it up, step by step

  1. Pick a male and a female Pal. The child is decided by the two species (see the breeding calculator or any Pal page), not by which one is male. Check gender in the Palbox summary.
  2. Move both into the base. They have to be base Pals, not in your party. Move them from the Palbox into the base, then pick each one up and drop it on the farm to assign it.
  3. Put Cake in the box. The farm does nothing without Cake and uses it up as it makes eggs, so stock several.
  4. Collect eggs from the same box. This is the "where is my egg?" answer: eggs land in the box at the front of the farm, next to the Cake.
  5. Hatch in an Egg Incubator. Larger eggs take longer. Incubator temperature matters: keep it at a comfortable temperature (use heaters or coolers nearby, or a Pal with the right element in the base) so it hatches at full speed.

Tip: keep a stack of Cake in the box. A farm with no Cake quietly stops, and the pair goes back to normal base work.

The five Cakes in 1.0

Palworld 1.0 turned Cake from a simple fuel into a choice. All five fit in the farm box; the effect applies to the eggs made with it.

CakeUnlock (Tech Lv)IngredientsWhat it does
Cakeearly5 Flour, 8 Red Berries, 7 Milk, 8 Eggs, 2 HoneyStandard breeding, no bonus
Mushroom Cake305 Flour, 5 Mushrooms, 3 Cavern Mushrooms, 8 Eggs, 2 HoneyChildren's talents (IVs) roll slightly higher
Vegetable Cake478 Flour, 8 Tomatoes, 7 Lettuce, 8 Eggs, 4 HoneyTwo eggs per cycle
Extravagant Vegetable Cake6012 Flour, 8 Cotton Candy, 10 Potatoes, 6 Onions, 8 CarrotsHigher mutation chance, better talents
Special Cake7420 Flour, 8 Caramel Cotton Candy, 15 Milk, 15 Eggs, 2 Mammorest MeatChild tries to inherit more of the parents' passives

The official 1.0 patch notes call the fourth one "Deluxe Vegetable Cake"; the in-game item appears as Extravagant Vegetable Cake. Same item.

Which one should you use?

  • Hunting a new species: Vegetable Cake. Twice the eggs means twice the chances.
  • Stacking passives on a finished line: Special Cake. Data-mined breeding settings show it forces the maximum inheritance roll (four passives from the parents' pool), which is the hardest roll to get otherwise. See how passive skills are inherited.
  • Chasing a mutation: Extravagant Vegetable Cake. See our mutation guide.
  • Polishing stats: Mushroom Cake, once the passives are right. See IVs and talents.

How to breed faster

  • Run several farms. Each farm breeds its own pair at the same time.
  • Use Vegetable Cake for two eggs per cycle.
  • Philanthropist doubles breeding speed (+100%) for a Pal assigned to a Breeding Farm. Put it on one or both parents of a pair you breed a lot.
  • Babysitter (a mutation-only passive) speeds up egg production and incubation by 30% for a Pal on the Breeding Farm.
  • Keep the incubator comfortable. A cold or hot incubator slows hatching.
  • Check your world settings. Hatch time is a world setting; 1.0 halved incubation time by default in newly created Normal and Hard worlds, so an older save may still use the slower value.
  • Keep the parents fed and happy. A starving or low-SAN Pal slows every job at the base.

Gender: the one exception

Normally you only need a male and a female, and swapping them changes nothing. The known exception is Katress + Wixen: a female Katress with a male Wixen hatches Katress Ignis, and a female Wixen with a male Katress hatches Wixen Noct. If you have the wrong genders, the Pal Surgery Table can change a Pal's gender (see the surgery table guide).

Common mistakes

  • Pals in your party can't breed. Both must be assigned to the base.
  • Two Pals of the same gender will never produce an egg.
  • No Cake, no egg. The most common "my farm isn't working" cause.
  • Expecting Early Access combos to work. 1.0 rewrote many pairs. Always check a current calculator; see what changed in 1.0.

Plan your pairs with the breeding calculator — it runs the same rules on the Palworld data.

Frequently asked questions

#
What level is the Breeding Farm in Palworld 1.0?

Technology Level 19. In 1.0 it is an Ancient Technology: it costs 2 Ancient Technology Points to learn, needs a win against the tower bosses Lily and Lyleen, and takes 50 Fiber, 20 Stone and 10 Wooden Boards to build.

Where is the egg on the Breeding Farm?

In the same wooden box where you put the Cake, at the front of the farm. Open it to collect the eggs, then carry them to an Egg Incubator.

Which Cake is best for breeding in Palworld 1.0?

It depends on the goal. Vegetable Cake gives two eggs per cycle, Special Cake improves passive inheritance, Extravagant (Deluxe) Vegetable Cake raises the mutation chance, and Mushroom Cake nudges stats (talents) higher. Plain Cake just keeps the farm running.

Does gender matter for breeding?

You always need one male and one female. Which parent is which doesn't change the child, with one known exception: Katress with Wixen, where the genders decide between Katress Ignis and Wixen Noct.

Can I have more than one Breeding Farm?

Yes. Each farm runs its own pair in parallel. More farms don't speed up a single pair, but they let you run several breeding lines at once.
